Pennsylvania 2 is a short story, 17000 words (about fifty five pages,) and it is the second in the five star rated Pennsylvania series.

Jedidiah Troyer and his new friend Dawn have arrived on New Pennsylvania - in the middle of a rebel uprising. TRACE, the resistance group that is rising up against TRANSPORT, has taken on the mission of getting Jed from the City to the Amish Zone.

Pennsylvania 2 NonElectric Boogaloo eBook Michael Bunker

The fascinating story that began in Michael Bunker's Pennsylvania continues here right at the point where Jed and his new band of cohorts left off in the first part. The author does a nice job of creating the tension and danger surrounding the characters. Mysteries abound in this story. You think you know what's going on, and then a few curveballs are thrown your way to keep you guessing. And those twists are very nicely weaved into the story, nothing comes out of left field. The plot is very intriguing. Characters are interesting and unique. The author uses some really great metaphors and imagery. Just like the first installment, Pennsylvania 2 is short and a very quick read. I'm anxious for the next installment to be released and hopefully won't have to wait too long.

I'm not sure if the author reads these reviews but I believe I found an error partway into the first chapter, at about the 10% location 107 mark. The author attributes some dialogue to Jonathan but it should have been attributed to Donavan. There isn't a Jonathan in the story. Not a big deal necessarily but I was a bit confused for a minute until I figured it must've just been a mistake. It did cause me to flip back a few pages to see if I missed something, though. I just thought if the author sees this than maybe it can be corrected for future editions. Here was part of the passage:

"I know. You guys can keep them. They're almost worthless anyway." More coughing and wheezing as Jonathan struggled to hang on to the thread of thought that was still pulling him onward."

Pennsylvania 2 NonElectric Boogaloo eBook Michael Bunker Reviews

Like so many others, I fell in love with book one of the Pennsylvania Series and yearned for more. Well, the author definitely delivered—this is more, and then some! I always find the middle book of any linear series to be the hardest to review. You don't want to give away too much, and you're always left with more questions than answers. That being said, I really enjoyed the development of the peripheral characters who are trying to save Jed, and we learned a great deal more about the resistance and how they work. This part of the story is higher paced than it's predecessor and it leaves a lot of room to wonder where the story is going to go next.

I highly recommend this series!
Moving right along from the end of the first installment, the plot thickens quickly. All is definitely not as it seems. I have some guesses that can't be discussed without tossing out spoilers. The story is too short for any debate of the plot. It's certain, though, that Jed's life is getting more complicated by the hour.

That point is my only issue with this otherwise engrossing story. Jed is in the hands of a group of rebels that are prepared to risk their lives to ensure that he completes his journey safely. But no one will explain anything to him, as though they don't think he's quite smart enough to understand. He's told time is short, but everyone around him seems to have plenty of time to discuss everything but Jed's situation. This irked me. I saw the rebel group as slightly annoying rather than heroic.

That won't stop me from reading the rest of Jed's story, though. I want to see if I've guessed right about a couple of things. I'm actually hoping for surprises. It's a very unusual story, well worth reading.
Mr. Bunker has turned out a solid second installment to his unique "Amish Sci-Fi" series Pennsylvania, but it contains a few flaws. The fact that we're in the "middle third" of the series means it still warrants 4 stars, hoping that some of the lingering issues will get resolved in the third act.

The Good
The mystery behind "New Pennsylvania" remains somewhat of a mystery. I've read enough sci-fi to have some theories on where things were going. Just when I thought I had it figured out, Mr. Bunker threw in a twist that confirmed some things, but added a huge twist that has me guessing again. The action was well written, and served the story well.

The Bad
The scenes in the antique store went on too long and much of the banter/discussion served little purpose. Motivations for many of the actors remain unclear (which may serve the greater story) but they seem to vacillate between devoted 'true believers to the cause' and mercenaries.

Overall
Reviewing the middle of a series is tricky, because much of it is going to be a setup to the third act. Pennsylvania 2 Non-Electric Boogaloo did what it needed to do. It moved the story forward, and the rough patches don't prevent me from reading book 3, but it's not as compelling as part 1.
I gave Michael Bunker's Pennsylvania 5 stars when I first read it and I'm here to give Part 2 the same amount. Once again, Mr. Bunker leaves the reader on the edge of their seat, waiting for the next shoe to drop in an exciting science-fiction adventure.
Okay, so this is a self-professed Amish Sci-Fi story and it certainly keeps the Amish side to the story, but we don't get as much of Jed's story in this part, instead we see the world that in which he has immersed himself in New Pennsylvania. Once again, the story does a fantastic job of presenting it all from Jed's point of view -- the viewpoint of an outsider and someone who finds themselves out of place and perhaps out of time as well.
We meet a bevy of new characters in part 2, nearly all of whom are claiming to protect or save Jed. We find ourselves as readers wondering why is he so special? What is happening to cause the fate of this world to revolve around one man who had been asleep for nine years in transport between Earth and this new world in book 1.
When I got to the last line of the book, it dropped a shocker on me and left me wondering one thing -- when will Mr. Bunker give us Part 3?
Well done -- once again a story in the vein of Heinlein and Asimov. I look forward to more from Michael Bunker.
